1. Main questions to ask yourself:

  • Work location: Where do you need to go on your first day?
  • Supervisor: Who do you need to talk on your first day?
  • Hours of work: What time do you start? When do you finish?
  • Travel arrangements: How to get to work? How long would it take?
  • Dress code: What should you wear? Is there a uniform?
  • Facilities: Is there a kitchen where you can prepare or buy your meals?
  • Your duties: Find out what task you will be doing?
  • Paperwork: Prepare what you need to fill up your taxation, superannuation, bank details and contract
  • Workplace policies: What are the policies of the new workplace (personal calls, social media use, public holidays, sick leave procedures, having visitors at work)?

2. Paperwork:

To fill out the following documents:

  • Letter of offer/employment contract
  • Tax File Number declaration form
  • Superannuation choice form
  • Policies

You might need:

  • Bank account details
  • Tax file number
  • Licences (white card, drivers licence)
  • Passport & visa
  • Proof of age
  • Qualification & school records
  • Apprenticeship/traineeship papers
  • Emergency contact details

 

3. Employment type:

  • Types of employments:
    • Full-time: 38 hours + reasonable additional hours
    • Part-time: <38 HOURS, Annual leave and personal leave on a pro-rata basis
    • Casual: Are not guaranteed a certain number of hours each week and get an extra percentage added to their rate of pay
  • Time
    • Ongoing (permanent)
    • Fixed term: Engaged for a specific period of time, season
  • Junior (<21 years old), Apprentice, Trainee, N/A

An Entreprise agreement needs to have been approved by the Fair Work Commission. The agreement overrides the award www.fwc.gov.au
If no Award or agreement, the job must be entitled to the National Minimum Wage

4. Pay:

  • What is your rate pay?
  • Would you be paid by Direct deposit/EFT, Cheque, Cash?
  • How often (Weekly, Fortnightly, Monthly)?
  • How will you get your payslip (Hard copy, Email, Mail)?

5. Hours and shifts:

  • What are the minimum hours you will work each week?
  • What is your roster?

6. Leave:

  • What leave are you entitled to?
    • Annual leave: 4 weeks paid per year
    • Personal/carer’s leave: up to 10 days
    • Compassionate leave
    • Community service leave: unpaid leave for voluntary emergency management activities, leave for jury service
    • Parental leave: up to 12 months unpaid
    • Long service leave: Paid leave for employees who have been with the same employer for a long time
    • Public holiday: day off on a public holiday
    • Redundancy pay: up to 16 weeks

7. Other:

  • Where should I store my personal items?
  • What should I do in case of an emergency?
  • Who should I contact if I am sick or running late?
  • Who should I ask if I have questions about my job?
