30, July 2020 – Sydney Venture Café – Life below water session
Vic Grosjean showcasing opportunities to drive investment towards UN SDG14 – Life below water.
How can businesses drive investment towards UN SDG-14: Life below water?
Oceans produce much of the world’s oxygen and help regulate the world’s climate. In 2020, however, the health of our ocean ecosystems are subject to multiple threats including pollution, warming, acidification and biodiversity loss. All of which have pushed our oceans past some key thresholds and into the danger zone.
While the number of oil spills and quantity of oil spilt has reduced the problem of plastics pollution has emerged as a major issue. At current rates there will be 1 tonne of plastic for every 3 tonnes of fish caught by 2025 . As most types of plastic take hundreds of years to break down, the microplastics engulfing our oceans are an immediate threat to not only sea life, but us.
Presenters:
- Kimberley Bolton of Carapac – a packaging alternative using discarded crustacean shells.
- Vic Grosjean, of OceanX Group how they are adapting underwater technology to better understand and address environmental impacts.
In this interactive discussion, our experts will explore:
- Past examples of sustainably managed fisheries; alternative packaging solutions and fuels
- Insights from startups and how using a startup framework can drive changes in consumer behaviour and purchasing habits.
- How a multi-sector approach will ensure adequate protection and restoration of Australia’s coastline and seas in the post-pandemic recovery and beyond.
Together, let’s generate more ideas to make things happen and create a more sustainable future for life both above, and below water.
