‘Friends of RS’ series provides opportunities for students and young professionals to inspire kids into engineering and technology.

Vic Grosjean, from Ocean Innovators, highlighted the problems facing our oceans and its wildlife, and how engineering innovations are helping to solve the 12 biggest threats faced by our Oceans today.
He talked about his journey and what made him decide to try and make a difference… how he saw birds on a beach that had died and how he found plastics in their stomach. He engaged with the young audience, enthusiastically demonstrating to them how engineering and technology can help solve world problems and what a fantastic career engineering is. The young audience asked questions in real time showing how they were thinking about this problem.

He opened their eyes on how to look at solving a problem, by breaking it down into several steps, from identifying a problem, researching it and seeing what others are doing to help, to communicating your vision to the world, looking at the market size of the opportunity and then building a prototype of your product. He encouraged the young audience to think through all these steps to understand what is involved, that it is not just having an idea! The audience took part in a live Q&A at the end too, showing how passionate they were about this topic.

Vic is developing cutting-edge technology to monitor and remove pollution from waterways and clean up our Oceans. His environmental project, called “The Ocean CleanX” was awarded at the United Nations in 2018 for his approach in stopping the pollution at its sources. He is an inspirational engineer and delivered the session passionately.
