Saving our Oceans through Engineering

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

27, January 2020 – Saving our Oceans through Engineering

Vic Grosjean launching the Ocean Innovators series

According to projections, by 2050, there is likely to be more plastics than fish in our oceans. “Saving our Oceans” has become critical for the future of humanity. What if Engineering could be used at the service of the planet? What if Engineering could help us Save our Oceans?

17 Goals to Transform Our World

The United Nations has established 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to be achieved by 2030. In 2016, the Paris Agreement on climate change entered into force, addressing the need to limit the rise of global temperatures.

What can you do to help us achieve these Goals?

Urgent call for Ocean Innovators

Saving our oceans starts in our cities & rivers. Over 90% of the plastics which end up in our oceans come from only 10 rivers. Plastics quickly enter the food chain. People across the world consume roughly 5 grams of plastic each week. But ocean pollution is not always visible to human eye. According to the World Health Organization, at least 2 billion people drink contaminated water. 3.4 million people, mostly children, die annually from water-related diseases.

Innovators around the world are awakening. Exceptional ideas have already emerged to address the 17 SDGs and help support our Oceans in relation to:

  • Life below water
  • Climate action
  • Clean water and sanitation

Social-Engineering for the service of humanity
It is estimated that there may be 15 million Engineers scattered around the planet. The practice of engineering has inherent and unavoidable impacts on society.

As Engineers, we carry the responsibility of designing better products and systems. Product design engineering is fundamental to conceive innovative and sustainable products. Our duty is also to educate society as to how engineering products can affect our environment.

Basic Engineering considerations can introduce tremendous impacts on the lives of millions of people:

  • Can you design better products?
  • Are your products and services sustainable?
  • Shall you use your skills to help save the planet?

Launching the Ocean Innovators platform

With only 10 years-left to achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, our planet is at-risk. Achieving better outcomes for future generations requires us to work together and implement new innovative solutions.

From January 2020, we will be launching a new platform dedicated to empower innovators. The “Ocean Innovators” is a weekly interview with an innovator featuring their solution helping the ocean.

The Ocean Innovators channel aims to connect and empower social and technological innovators around the world acting to support ocean-related SDGs.

More importantly, this platform aims to inspire the next generation of Engineers to overcome our challenges through innovation. Saving our Oceans starts with your help, join us today!
