3, November 2022 – IET Interview: Exploring the oceans.
Vic Grosjean interviewed by the IET.
What Is Ocean Engineering?
Ocean engineering is a field of study that deals with the design and operations of man-made systems in the ocean and other marine bodies.
What Do Ocean Engineers Do?
They have the technical expertise and skills to find solutions to problems related to oceans. This could be creating physical or mechanical things such as an autonomous submarine for super deep ocean study, or drones for monitoring – or creating computer programming – sometimes using AI and machine learning to identify patterns and sort data, perhaps relating to weather patterns, levels of pollution or the movement of marine life. Ocean engineers might be inventing instruments to record levels of chemicals or pollution in waters, or using sonar to locate marine life.

Key Facts about Vic:
• Principal Consultant at OceanX Group who is all about reducing pollution and creating cleaner water.
• Climate change can seem gloomy but remember kids, it’s engineering that’s SOLVING PROBLEMS!
• He has worked on shark-detecting drones, autonomous sea vehicles, and artificial barrier reefs.
• His work is all about putting people in touch with others to share knowledge to solve problems – collaboration is key to problem-solving which is a key theme I think.
